In mid 1994, five concerned educationalists pooled their considerable
experience in education and training and formed a high quality business
school. Our mission is to provide a caring and personalised environment for
the growth and development of our students and to offer truly international
courses and qualifications. This latter objective was deemed crucial to
rectify the limitations and introspective views which developed in South
Africa tertiary education due to the long period of international isolation.
In fact, our branding was intended to attract students into international
studies. back to top By early 1996, Global opened a second campus in
Randburg (northern suburb of Johannesburg). At that time, ties were
established with Bond University in Australia. Bond University is invited to
the annual MOOT CORP MBA competition, held in Austin, Texas. Eighteen Ivy
League Business Schools (Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, M I T) and a number of
blue chips from Europe (e.g. London Business School, Lyon, INSEAD) compete
in this challenge which is called the "World Series of MBA competitions" by
Business Week. Bond University has the best track record in this
competition, winning in 1996 and 1994, coming second in 1995 and 1993 and
winning in 2000. This unprecedented third win coupled with being runners up
on two occasions, marks Bond as the most consistent performer in the
competition. On 28 June 1996 a contract was received, authorising Global to
offer Bond University programmes in South Africa. Programmes are delivered
at Global's new high-tech purpose built campus in Sandton, Johannesburg as
well as our new St. Albans campus in Lynwood-Glen, Pretoria and in
Rondebosch, Cape Town. Half the lectures are given by Bond faculty and half
by local academics, approved by Bond University. The first MBA intake in
January 97 had 53 students. In 1998, Bond introduced an MBA with an
Information Technology emphasis to South Africa in addition to it's General
MBA. Both these programmes were oversubscribed, and students were limited to
45 in each class. At the end of 1996 Global was validated by the University
of Hull UK to deliver its MBA in Strategic Marketing in South Africa. This
would be the first specialist MBA to be presented in South Africa. In July
1997 the first intake commenced in Johannesburg. In January 1998 programmes
commenced in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town. The University of
Hull MBA in Strategic Marketing is still the only MBA in South Africa to
have gained full accreditation from the IMM (Institute of Marketing
Management). back to top In August 1996 Global was acquired by Advanced
Technical Systems Ltd (Advtech) which was the top performing company on the
JSE in 1996. In 1998 Advtech was rated overall as one of the top 5 companies
in South Africa by the annual Financial Mail Corporate Survey, published in
November 1998. This achievement was to be followed by an even greater
distinction, in being selected by "Forbes Global Magazine, Nov 2 1998 issue"
as "One of the World's Best 300 Small Companies". Only 7 South African
companies made the list. In March 1998, April 1999 and April 2000, we sent a
South African Bond MBA team to compete in the international MBA competition
in San Diego, USA. The competition comprised of 40 universities which were
narrowed down to 5 finalists. We are extremely proud to announce that our
1999 MBA team was placed second overall and our 1999 team made the
semi-finals. This is a unique achievement for South African Business
Schools, and from the Bond South Africa MBA perspective gives us the comfort
that our students are equipped to compete with the best on an international
basis. Bond University in Australia also won the 2000 world series of MBA
competitors in Texas, USA Global has within 4 years become the most
successful part-time IMM tuition centre, producing more graduates over the
past 5 exam sittings than any other college. Our average pass rate over all
the subjects in the last two exams have been 75%. Global also has the
distinction of being the largest ICSA part-time tuition centre in Gauteng,
with prize winners over the last 6 exam sittings. We are still the only
tuition centre to achieve first, second and third place in a single exam
sitting! In March 1998, our MBA in Strategic Marketing from the University
of Hull became the first MBA programme to be accredited by the Institute of
Marketing Management (IMM). During November 1998, Global was awarded the PMR
(Professional Management Review) Magazine's Silver Arrow Award for it's
marketing courses. Global will continue to focus on the part-time
professional institute diploma market where it has achieved great success in
the recent past, being one of the leading tuition centres for IMM, ICSA,
PRISA and SAIM students. The Bond University General MBA programme will be
offered in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town in 2000. The Bond MBA with
the IT focus will be offered in Johannesburg and Pretoria. The Bond MBA with
a marketing specialisation will be offered in Johannesburg, Pretoria and
Cape Town. Global School of Business is proud to have been chosen to offer
the IEX graduate diploma in Export Management at our Sandton campus. For
more information, see global courses. Global has also been in the forefront
of establishing the first private international University offering
undergraduate degrees from Bond University, Australia. A range of
undergraduate degrees will be offered from the year 2000. The new purpose
built campus is located in the heart of Sandton, and offers one of the most
technically advanced campuses in SA today.
